Solåsen is a basic type of cottage from 1840. Until the beginning of the nineteenth century, the basic cottage was a very common type of dwelling in rural areas. Read more about its exterior, interior and structure here.

The basic cottage is one of the oldest designs of cottage, which probably evolved from the timber cottage with a hall, bedroom and kitchen/living room during the Middle Ages. Excavations in Skara and Lödöse indicate that this type of cottage may have existed as early as the 12th and 13th centuries. We find early examples of this design in a few late Middle Age castle buildings such as Torpa Stenhus in Kind.

The basic cottage was probably a common type of residential building on medium-sized farms, but in the nineteenth century is was mainly built on small farms and crofter's holdings, and was very common along the Bohus coast. The same type of cottage started to be built in the beginning of the 19th century with two floors. This type of building is also found in other parts of the country, but is particularly common in Dalsland where it appeared during the agricultural boom between 1800 and 1880.
